Santa's love of mince pies promotes an unhealthy lifestyle

The image of Santa Claus snacking on mince pies and riding on a sleigh promotes obesity and an unhealthy lifestyle, a public health expert has warned.

Writing in the Christmas issue of the BMJ Dr Nathan Grills, from Monash University in Australia, says that Santa should swap his reindeer for a bike or walk and ditch the mince pies in favour of fresh vegetables.

After conducting a review of literature and web-based material to assess Santa's potential negative impact on public health, Dr Grills found that Santa encourages not only unhealthy foods but also promotes drink driving.

The tradition of leaving Santa Claus a brandy to wish him well on his travel, with a few billion houses to visit Santa would soon be over the limit, says Dr Grills.

While more research is needed before calling for authorities to regulate Santa's activities, Grills proposes a new image for Santa — a slimmed down version on a treadmill.

Bah humbug, Dr Grills!

Now I know the world has completely lost the plot, when educated people start to question Santa's subliminal health message to us all, perhaps he should have an enhanced CRB check as he is in direct contact with billions of children in one night too!

It's Christmas for goodness sake, crack your face and smile Dr Grills, you never know, you might even enjoy yourself!!

\(But don't overdo the saturated fats and make sure you only ingest water!!) LOL and Best wishes for a Happy 2010

Or just tell your children that the reindeer ate the mince pies and swigged the sherry, and Santa ate the carrot!!

It's official, the world has gone mad.

Please leave this one tradition that brings joy to millions alone.

I have never heard a child saying that they want to be Santa when they grow up.

Merry Christmas to one and all and enjoy your water and carrots.

This can't be serious! And anyway my daughter, now 29, wouldn't let us leave the brandy out .. she was being sanctimonious about drink driving at the tender age of 6ish!

Is nobody allowed to make tongue-in-cheek comments about Santa? Don't you get the joke?

Digby Bennett - 18 December 2009
