MA Medical Law and Ethics

19-Jun-08 - 31 Oct 2008

Organised By: School of Law

Medical law and ethics are continually in the news, including the debates over the abortion time limit, chimeric embryo research, expensive new medicines, legislation against second hand smoke, to assisted suicide. The dramatic developments in medical science have thrown together an exciting challenge to lawyers, doctors and policy makers and this Masters course has been designed to meet that challenge.

The course can be taken full-time over one year or part-time over two years and is open to students from both a legal and non-legal background. Teaching will comprise two core courses - 'Medical Jurisprudence' and 'The Regulation of New Medical Technologies' - plus optional courses including 'Intellectual Property Aspects of Medicine', 'Consent', 'Mental Health Law' and 'Advanced Medical Negligence'.

Assessment is a mixture of exams and written papers. In the summer, you will conduct research for a dissertation of 10,000-15,000 words on a topic of your choosing within the overall field of the MA.

For full-time students - two half days per week

For part-time students - one half day per week

Current students include practicing nurses, doctors, solicitors, barristers and pharmaceutical, health care and genetics professionals, as well as non medical/law sectors. Staff are experts in their field, reflected in Queen Mary's School of Law being awarded the highest possible rating of 5* in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE). Upon completion of the course, students will receive the prestigious University of London qualification, which is renowned globally by employers.
