Scottish GPs lose out in overall DES fund allocation

Scottish practices will be eligible for only half the money available to English practices under new directed enhanced services (DESs), according to medical secretary of Argyll and Clyde LMC Dr John Ip.
There will be £12.6 million of new money, which works out at roughly £12,000 per practice as opposed to £24,700 in England, excluding the access DES.
Four new DESs on cardiovascular risk data, carers, learning disability and cancer referrals are close to agreement in Scotland.
Dr Ip was pleased that these DESs would reward patient-focused services in contrast to England, where new DESs cover choice, commissioning and IT.
The DESs in Wales will also put patients first, according to Dr Andrew Dearden, chairman of GPC Wales, and agreement is imminent in Northern Ireland.
