Biomarkers can help to predict elderly death risk

Neuroendocrine, immunological and cardiovascular biomarkers can be used to predict mortality risk in the elderly, according to US researchers.
Levels of 13 biomarkers were measured in 1,189 people aged 70 to 79 years and compared with mortality risk over the subsequent 12 years.
Measures of CRP, IL-6, fibrinogen, adrenaline and noradrenaline were all found to be important predictors of mortality among men.
Among women, high systolic BP was a strong indicator, along with CRP, IL-6 and HbA1c.
