Nine steps to better general practice

22-Sep-06

Maximising the use of practice-based commissioning (PBC) and promoting patient self-management are two of nine major steps that can improve general practice, according to the Improvement Foundation.

The successor to the National Primary Care Development Team has published the ‘High Impact Changes’ leaflet jointly with the NHS Institute for Innovation and is sending it to every GP practice in England.

The two organisations arrived at the nine ‘proven ways to improve the quality and efficiency of patient services’ by looking at best-practice models around the country.

Sir John Oldham, head of the Improvement Foundation, said: ‘Few practices are implementing all of these changes, or implementing them to the maximum.

‘It is when all of these changes are put in place that the biggest impact will be made. These changes are proven to deliver for patients.’

The nine changes, endorsed by the RCGP and the NHS Alliance, are promoting self care, improving long-term condition management, patient access, redesigning practice roles, using existing data, patient feedback, avoiding unnecessary follow-ups, providing services closer to patients and maximising the use of PBC.
