Fewer deaths from cancer and CVD

28-Sep-06

Coronary heart disease
The DoH has announced that the mortality rates from cancer and CVD have improved. These figures are based on recent data from the Office of National Statistics (ONS).
The latest figures for individuals under the age of 75 years show that mortality rates from cancer have reduced by 15.7 per cent and those from CVD have reduced by 35.9 per cent since 1996.

These figures are set for a further reduction and the DoH indicate that they are on track to meet their 2010 targets – reduce deaths due to cancer by at least 20 per cent and deaths due to CVD by at least 40 per cent.

The figures released by the ONS equate to over 50,000 lives saved from deaths due to cancer and almost 150,000 lives saved from deaths due to CVD since 1996.
