The guideline on anaemia management in patients with CKD sets targets for haemoglobin levels in this group. The draft of the guidelines set a level for treatment of 11g/dl or less.
The guidance, which was due to be published as GP went to press, states that all CKD patients with anaemia should be treated regardless of age. Care of CKD is increasingly shifting to primary care following the inclusion of the condition in the GMS quality framework.
In addition, the implementation of part two of the renal NSF will put the balance of care for these patients in primary care.
Kidney disease experts say that routine tests for anaemia should be part of GPs’ care of CKD patients.
Dr Paul Stevens, clinical advisor to the Guideline Development Group and consultant nephrologist, said: ‘The guideline will help GPs understand what is required to provide the best services for people with anaemia and CKD.’
The guidance calls for education programmes to be introduced for all anaemic CKD patients.
