Researchers from Bristol University have found a possible link between sleep deprivation and obesity in children.

The evidence from their study has shown that sleep loss leads to hormonal changes that trigger the body to demand foods high in carbohydrates. If this continues over a significant period of time the child can become overweight.

The authors of the study identify that great efforts are being made to educate children about exercise and eating healthy foods, but adults and healthcare professionals should be emphasising the importance of adequate sleep.

Parents can begin by removing phones, computers and televisions from the child’s bedroom to encourage them to go to sleep on time.
