Pfizer to be investigated by OFT

24-Oct-06

The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) is to investigate Pfizer's plans to distribute directly to community pharmacists.
An article in Pharma Times reports that the OFT has received a number of complaints concerning Pfizer’s plans to use UniChem to distribute its medicines directly to community pharmacists and dispensing practices, and the OFT are considering whether it needs to take the matter further.

Pfizer plans to implement their initiative from March 2007 and highlights the rise in counterfeit medicines as the reason for the change. Over the last 12 months there have been three batches of counterfeit Lipitor and Pfizer have recalled 120,000 packs.

Critics of this move have claimed that Pfizer are simply discouraging parallel imports.

Pharma Times state that a decision will be made by 16 November.
