Patients able to veto medical records upload

12-Jan-07

Patients will be able to veto having their medical records uploaded to the national care record database, after a U-turn by the DoH.

The change came last month after recommendations from a DoH task force.

Under previous policy, summaries of all patient records were to be uploaded to the database, with patients able to limit access to some parts.

Patients will also now be able to request the removal of any part of their data on the national care record database, and to ‘opt out of sharing’ the record across the NHS, according to the DoH.

The former health minister Lord Warner had said only weeks earlier that patients could not opt out of the record system.

Pilots of the system will start in spring 2007 but details of how patients will be able to stop information being added to the database have yet to be revealed.
