95% of GPs denied child obesity care

Over 90 per cent of GPs say that they want to be able to refer patients to local schemes to treat childhood obesity.
The findings come from a survey of 128 GPs visiting the website of MEND, an obesity prevention and treatment programme for children aged 7-13.
Among GPs surveyed, 95 per cent said that they would refer children to a MEND programme if one was available locally, with 56 per cent saying they could refer one or two children a month.
Eighty-nine per cent of GPs said the DoH should focus its funding on multi-disciplinary programmes if it was to meet the public service agreement to halt obesity in under-11s by 2010.
