GP groups must unite to fight DoH on pay freeze

16-Mar-07

The GPC should join forces with the RCGP, NHS Alliance and National Association of Primary Care to take on the DoH, according to its former chairman Dr John Chisholm.

Following the government’s decision to freeze GMS income, he believes that a united front is needed to combat bad media coverage and poor relations with the DoH.

His suggestion was made on the eve of a GPC meeting to decide what action to take following the zero uplift on GMS pay, and below-inflation rises for other parts of the GP workforce.

At the meeting, members were expected to push for GPs to halt work on enhanced services that deliver key DoH policies such as Choose and Book. Boycotts on practice-based commissioning and some IT services were also to be tabled.

Prior to the meeting, GPC leaders refused to comment on whether they would resort to direct action.
