Cut asthma by making homes free of mould

Symptoms of asthma and rhinitis can be reduced by ensuring that a home is free from mould, according to Welsh researchers.
The study included 164 patients with asthma who were allocated to have their house cleaned of mould or a control group. The intervention included application of fungicide and a fan installed in the loft.
Peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR) was measured six and 12 months later and a symptom questionnaire was administered.
The researchers found no difference in PEFR between the two groups. But at six months, the intervention group had a 25 per cent improvement in the degree that wheeze affected their activities and a 52 per cent improvement in their breathing.
At 12 months the intervention group had significantly less need for preventer and reliever medication and improved rhinitis.
