Treadmill desk makes obese people ‘walk and work’

14-May-07

Obese patients to walk and work
Researchers have developed a vertical work-station, incorporating a treadmill, which could help obese employees shed up to 30kg in weight every year.

The study, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, describes a moveable workstation designed by the authors. Energy expenditure was measured while working and walking for 35 minutes out of an hour in total and compared with that burned while working, seated at a desk.

Working at the vertical work-station increased energy expenditure by 100 kilocalories per hour. According to the authors, over one year this translates into shedding between 20 and 30kg.
