Quality additions would harm care

31-May-07

Two thirds of GPs do not want any new clinical domains to be included in the next quality framework, according to the results of a GP survey.

Sixty-one per cent of respondents called for no new clinical domains to be added to the quality framework.

The majority of GPs felt that quality of care would be compromised if new clinical areas were added, while others believed that it was more important to spend more time with patients than ticking boxes.

Bournemouth GP Dr Stephen Kidman said that he would not want to see any new clinical domains added.

'Resources are stretched to the limit coping with what we have already got. Adding more clinical domains will encourage cutting corners and will reduce quality,' he said.

The survey showed that 22 per cent of GPs wanted to include osteoporosis in the quality framework, while 8 per cent voted for the inclusion of sexual health and 5 per cent wanted to see rheumatoid arthritis added.

GPC deputy chairman Dr Laurence Buckman, joint chairman of the quality framework review team, said that there never had been any prospect of changes for 2007/8.
