DoH blamed for out-of-hours meltdown

14-Jun-07

Dr Stuart Drage
GPs should not take the flack for the government’s foul up of out-of-hours care according to GPC negotiator Dr Stewart Drage.

The government drastically underestimated the logistics of running competent night time services when it took over the responsibility he told the LMCs Conference on Thursday.

In asking the conference to back a motion expressing concern for the service tabled by Stockport GP Dr David Gilbert, he said: 'We told them for years how running the service was detrimental to our work/life balance but they did not listen. Do not take the responsibility for something they refused to do for years and years.'

The motion, which was carried by a large majority, lambasted politicians from all parties for the 'shambolic' hash of out-of-hours care.
