Private firms 'may negotiate GMS contract'

22-Jun-07

GPC negotiator Dr Richard Vautrey
Private firms will be invited to take part in GMS contract talks, according to NHS Employers.

Chief GMS negotiator Philip Grant is reported as saying 'negotiations will change sooner rather than later' to include private firms.

However, GP leaders dismissed the comments as 'bizarre and unrealistic'.

GPC negotiator Dr Richard Vautrey said independent-sector providers may wish to take part, and if they were included, PMS contractors could also demand to be represented.

'Private firms are not working under GMS contracts, so why should they be involved in negotiations?' Dr Vautrey said.

The move could put pressure on the GPC to agree tough targets similar to those in APMS deals exposed by GP (Tougher APMS targets to raise bar for all GPs - GP, 8 June).

Dr Vautrey said APMS deals pushed for 'value for money at the expense of quality'. He predicted private firms would not be involved in GMS negotiations.
