Think tank criticises health minister’s polyclinic plan

07-Aug-07

Professor Sir Ara Darzi
A health minister’s plan to move surgeries into large polyclinics and downgrade hospitals could put ‘road blocks’ in the way of critical changes, a report has warned.

In its report, ‘Weaknesses in the Darzi review of the London NHS’, public sector think-tank Reform claims that Lord Darzi’s plans for a major overhaul of healthcare provision in the capital are not feasible and would hinder cheaper and more effective reform models currently on the table.

The report is highly critical of Sir Ara’s costing estimates and the authors say satellite hospitals will suffer when cash is sucked up by centrally-located specialist centres.

The report is the latest in a wave of criticisms of the Darzi report which was published last month.

Well if Reform are against the plan that's a good omen. reform of course is a right wing think tank promoting marketisation of the NHS. The polyclinic is a practical approach to the competing tendencies of centralisation of specialist functions and the increasing provision of routine interventions in community settings. GPs will not be 'here' into these places although it may be sensible to base some there. There are other models such as the Cuban one where the policlinico is the hub that supports family health services at neighbourhood (block) level. we sdon'e have the same density of medical staff as they do, but some aspects of the model which has outstanding prevntative practice, could be borrowed.
