UK lags behind Europe on cancer survival rates

Cancer survival rates in the UK continue to lag behind the rest of Europe, according to a major European study published in The Lancet.
The average five-year cancer survival rates for Europe were 45 per cent for men and 55 per cent for women, compared to 42 and 53 per cent for men and women in the UK.
The findings suggest that the NHS cancer plan is not working and the UK faces challenging questions about the provision of oncology services.
In an accompanying commentary, DoH cancer czar Professor Mike Richards said that the poor results of the UK were attributable mainly to patients having more advanced disease at diagnosis.
‘This indicates that particular emphasis should be put on earlier diagnose,’ said Professor Richards.
The study looked at all cancers including prostate and ovarian cancer.
