Practices needed to coordinate pregnancy advice for women

03-Sep-07

GPs and nurses could be expected to take a more active role in advising women through pregnancy, after a survey revealed that more than half received conflicting advice.

The survey of 1,100 pregnant women, conducted by the baby charity Tommy’s, showed that 60 per cent of the surveyed women said they had found information sources that contradicted each other.

One in five women said that when they found information, they either did not understand it or that it failed to answer their questions fully.

The increasing use of the internet as a source of information on pregnancy appears to be the cause of the conflicting advice.

More than 70 per cent of the women surveyed said they had logged on to websites to access information on pregnancy.
