Double prostate cancer nurse workforce, charity urges

20-Nov-07

Prostate cancer patients receive poor treatment because specialist nurses for the condition face caseloads twice the size of those of breast cancer nurses, a charity pressure group has warned.

The group, Prostate Cancer Charter for Action, has called for an extra 260 whole time equivalent clinical nurse specialists for urological cancers. This would double the workforce and bring the number of newly diagnosed cases per nurse specialist in line with breast cancer.

Chief executive of The Prostate Cancer Charity, John Neate, said: ‘Clinical nurse specialists working in urological cancers have on average to deal with a significantly larger caseload than nurses working in other common cancers.’
