DoH to increase funding for maternity services

Health secretary Alan Johnson has responded to Healthcare Commission criticism of maternity services in England by announcing extra funding for them.
It will increase over the next three years to reach an additional £122 million annually.
The funds are aimed to ensure that mothers receive the best possible care and are guaranteed the full range of birthing choices.
There will also be improved flexibility of maternity services’ opening hours to make services more convenient for mothers.
Criticism in the Healthcare Commission’s Maternity Service Review included trusts with too few midwives. A third of trusts did not meet Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists guidelines for consultant presence on labour wards.
