Call for national CKD screening programme

13-Mar-08

Kidney x-ray
The charity Kidney Research UK has launched a bid to establish a national chronic kidney disease (CKD) screening programme trial.

The call coincides with World Kidney Day 2008, which takes place today.

Around 8 per cent of the UK population are affected by CKD, but just 3 per cent have been identified.

Pilots of the screening programme will take place in Birmingham, Oldham and Leicester this summer.

The pilots will target 2,000 patients in high-risk groups, including black African Caribbeans, South Asians, diabetics, hypertensives and those with family history of kidney disease.
