Health minister: PCT management 'may be privatised'

04-Jun-08

Ben Bradshaw
Private companies will be asked to run failing PCTs and hospital trusts under new DoH plans.

Health minister Ben Bradshaw insisted the plan was not to privatise trusts and would only be used to replace chronically underperforming management.

New measures set out in the document Developing the NHS Performance Regime will help to identify failing trusts and bring in new management from other trusts or the private sector.

The report confirms that PCTs will develop scorecards to measure performance and outcomes in GP surgeries. This will be used, along with Healthcare Commission data, to identify failing PCTs.

Ten PCTs were identified as ‘double weak' by the Healthcare Commission in the 2007/8 annual health check.

NHS director of finance David Flory said private companies would be offered financial bonuses for improving underperforming trusts.

Ben Bradshaw is probably on a different planet. Cant he see what people think of this DoH and its bullying ways? This sounds more like a carnage of the NHS. Selling off everything in a last act of desperation.

A simple question. Suppose I am the Chief executive of a PCT or an Acute Trust. I decide to sell a land around the hospital or a building. I get some money out of the deal. That was a quite big piece of land, thus my financial figures now look bright. Should my move be rewarded as I did improve the budget?

Private firms may be looking after immediate and great proficts. We need more State, no less of it. The Crisis in the Banking sector is illuminating.

I agree with this doccument, after all if any other company was failing or loosing money the person in charge would be sacked or more politcaly correct resign. Why should the NHS be any different. These managers are paid very large wages out of public money and have the responsibilty to manage the organisation well. I also beleive that big financial rewards when they leave for failing to manage should be stopped, after all once again this is public money.
