LMCs conference: Creation of new GP grade for polyclinics 'totally unacceptable'

12-Jun-08

Moves to create new grades of GP are 'totally unacceptable', said speakers at today's LMC conference.

Yorkshire SHA's response to the Darzi review proposal to create the role of a specialist children's GP to handle all paediatric care in the community.

And, as revealed by GP, some PCTs are considering creating a ‘staff' grade of doctor to run polyclinics under a single qualified GP.

But the conference unanimously backed a motion that children were central to general practice, and give GPs a ‘holistic' view of the whole family.

And RCGP chair Steve Field dismissed proposals for staff grade doctors and ‘community physicians' as ‘rubbish'. ‘They need to be stopped,' he said.

‘Even if they wanted to create a new grade of doctor, it would take them ten years,' added Dr Field.
