In a debate last night, GPs from England, Scotland and Wales all spoke in favour of a motion that ‘the GMS contract should continue to be negotiated at a UK level'. Dr Ian Millington, from Morgannwg LMC, said it was right that ‘a patient in north Scotland should get the same treatment as a patient in England'.
The motion passed, with overwhelming support.
But there were hints of discontent over the government's failure to resolve the English question. Dr Guy Watkins, from Cambridgeshire LMC, said: ‘We want a UK contract because we are stronger together.
But he called for devolution to be extended to England, so that MPs from the Celtic fringe could no longer vote on English health policy.
The motion was lost overwhelmingly.
