LMCs conference: GPC should support practices to make APMS bids

13-Jun-08

Private healthcare companies have an unfair advantage when bidding for APMS contracts, GPs have claimed.

Today's LMCs conference overwhelmingly backed a motion calling on the GPC to support practices trying to compete with the bidding departments of multinational healthcare companies.

They also backed motions warning that private companies such as United Health would provide inferior services to cut costs, and posed a threat to GP training.

GPC negotiator Dr Chaand Nagpaul took issue with the description of ‘creeping privatization', claiming it was ‘unnecessarily tame'.

‘What we're witnessing is front door privatisation,' he said.

Meanwhile, Natalie Teich, of the BMA's patient liaison group, warned: ‘I have relatives back in the US, and I've seen what big business has done to healthcare there. Let's not let a two-tier system develop here, too.'

The motion was carried unanimously.
