Arsenic linked to diabetes

Exposure to arsenic increases the risk of type-2 diabetes, a US government health survey has found. Arsenic levels in the urine of 788 adults were measured. Those in the top quintile of arsenic exposure were 3.6 times more likely to have type-2 diabetes (JAMA 2008; 300:814-22).

COPD drugs proven effective
Beta-2 agonist and inhaled corticosteroid treatment reduces decline in moderate to severe COPD. A study of 5,343 patients found that salmeterol plus fluticasone reduced decline in FEV1 by 16ml a year compared with placebo (Am J Respir Crit Care Med 2008; 178: 332-38).

Running slows down ageing
Jogging for four hours per week can increase life expectancy and mean fewer disabilities in old age, say US researchers. (Arch Intern Med Online 2008).
