GPC chairman Dr Laurence Buckman wrote in a letter to GPs last week: 'If there are to be major changes to the contract, which would include changes to the MPIG, any final deal would have to be subject to the agreement of the profession.'
In February all UK GPs were polled on whether to accept an unpopular contract or an even less popular imposed contract.
Dr Buckman said he did not necessarily mean there would be another poll of opinion if the MPIG was scrapped.
'It could involve getting GPs' opinion through LMCs. If it's more complicated, we'll just ask LMCs. We've told the DoH that, in the event of a major change, we would be asking the profession what it thinks.'
