Posture lessons plus exercise eases back pain

20-Aug-08

Alexander technique lessons, designed to help patients improve postural balance and coordination, significantly alleviate back pain in the long-term, when used alongside exercise, UK research suggests.

A year-long study carried out by Southampton and Bristol Universities has shown that patients who received 24 lessons experienced just three days of back pain in four weeks.

This compares with 21 days of back pain in the same period for patients who received normal care. Massage had little benefit.

Six individual lessons alongside exercise were 72 per cent as effective as one full course of 24 lessons.

For the study, the researchers assessed disability levels at three months and again at one year in a group of 579 patients with recurrent or chronic back pain.
