What is RSS?

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. It allows you to ‘subscribe’ to the latest news and articles from all of your favourite sites, but without having to visit each one every day.

What is an RSS news reader?

This software checks the RSS feeds and lets you read the headlines and, sometimes, the introduction of the new article. Clicking on the story titles takes you to the full article.

There are many RSS news readers available. Google has a comprehensive directory of the main readers.

Online RSS news readers such as netvibes allow you to customise the page so that you can position your favourite news feeds at the top.

Add Healthcare Republic to netvibes by clicking this button:

Modern internet browsers such as Firefox and Internet Explorer 7 allow you bookmark your news feeds as you would bookmark a page on the internet.

How do I subscribe to a news feed?

Many websites include the RSS logo to indicate a news feed is available.

You can subscribe in a number of ways including:

  • Drag the orange button into you news reader.
  • Drag the url of the news feed into your reader.
  • Cut and paste the url of the news feed into you reader.

The latest browsers will also display the orange icon when a website has a news feed. You can simply click on the icon to add it as a bookmark.
