An estimated 600,000 people in England currently have dementia, but more than half of these will never receive a formal diagnosis and families only get help when they reach crisis point.
Moreover, the situation could get worse, with incidence of dementia expected to double by 2040.
Care services minister Ivan Lewis wants a national strategy to ensure better awareness of the early signs of dementia among the general public. He also called for earlier diagnosis and improving the quality of treatment and support patients with diagnosis receive.
‘It is of the utmost importance that we have the right services in place for people with dementia as well as those who love and care for them,’ said Mr Lewis.
But it will be next summer before the DoH announces a transformation plan to improve services across England.
