Students handed 'nurse' qualifications that fail NMC standard

UK universities may be handing out qualifications that include the title ‘nurse’ or ‘midwife’, which do not meet standards required for registration in either profession.
The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) has demanded talks with the Council for Healthcare Regulatory Excellence over fears that overseas employers could hire graduates of these courses believing they were qualified nurses or midwives.
The University of Bangor offers a ‘degree in midwifery studies’ that would not qualify graduates to practise as a midwife, but the NMC is concerned there may be other examples.
The NMC does not have powers to prevent courses from using these titles. But it believes that public protection would be strengthened if agreement was reached with educators over how they are used.

I am outraged by this. There must be something that the government could do as this undermines our profession even further. Its bad enough that care assisstants feel that they can call themselves nurses

This is absolute rubbish we (nurses and midwives) spend so many years working to the bones to get our qualifications and these univeersities are allowed to do what they want. They need to be stopped. RCN and RCM where are you?

I am appalled at this. This surely merits further investigation and action from the NMC. This is bringing the nursing profession into disrepute.
