GPC readies plan to reform funding

27-Jun-08

GPC negotiators are preparing proposals for practice funding that would see correction factors incorporated into a larger global sum.

Practice funding should emulate the way PCTs are funded, said GPC negotiator Dr Chaand Nagpaul. Differential uplift in different areas would gradually raise budgets for up to 20 years until practices adopt formula-based budgets, said Dr Nagpaul. Any formula would be applied to a larger global sum, he said.

'The government has taken the view that PCTs need protection from reductions in income so it is ridiculous to think that GP practices don't,' said Dr Nagpaul.

Dr Nagpaul said he was in the early stages of discussions with the DoH, and was looking beyond the current legal challenge over the cuts to MPIG this year.
