The statement follows publication of health profiles of every SHA in the country, reiterating the differences in wellbeing between the north and south of England.
Both men and women living in the London borough of Kensington and Chelsea live the longest, at 83.1 years and 87.2 years, respectively.
But men in Manchester live to just 73 on average, and women in Liverpool to just 78.3 years. Most of this difference is due to smoking, says the DoH.
However, London may have a bigger problem with childhood obesity, with 16 per cent of reception-age children classified as obese, compared with 5 per cent of those in the north east.
Meanwhile, an online tool developed by the Association of Public Health Observatories allows health organisations to use the data to assess the effectiveness of a range of health interventions.
