Nurses 'may carry out abortions' following Parliamentary debate

26-Jun-08

Nurses could be allowed to carry out abortions if amendments put forward to the House of Commons are approved.

Amendments have been submitted by the British Pregnancy Advisory Service, for debate in Parliament in early July, to allow nurses with suitable training to take part in abortion care wherever appropriate.

Currently, nurses can only perform pregnancy tests, provide counselling and undertake ultrasound scanning.
But if the amendments are successful, nurses would be allowed to carry out both early medical abortions and surgical abortions, provided they have the sufficient training.

However, nurses would not be allowed to sign the legal grounds for abortion which would still be reserved to doctors.

There has been a death reported recently following a termination. How many more deaths do you want before someone talks SENSE and not provide the abortion service that is about to be offered? Currently the inication for abortions are EXTREMELY lax. This should be tightened. I fully empathise with the individual who has become encumbered with an unwanted pregnancy but if in the first instance the individuals concerned took some responsibility for their actions we will not have this problem.
