Cancer care from GP of an 'incomparable standard'

25-Jul-08

After losing his wife to ovarian cancer, Leslie Wright contacted GP to highlight the outstanding care she had received from their local GP, Dr David Pouncey.

Dr Pouncey has worked at the Minchinhampton surgery in Gloucester for over 15 years.

Mr Wright was so impressed by the care he and his wife received that he wants to nominate the GP for an award.

'He's known locally as a saint,' said Mr Wright, whose wife passed away earlier this year.

'We moved to the area three years ago. It was Dr Pouncey who initially diagnosed her after someone else had misdiagnosed.

'He gave us his mobile number and said to ring him any time, rather than the on-call doctors who knew nothing about her.'

Dr Pouncey, supporting GP's Valuing General Practice campaign, said: 'It's part of what is expected of us in palliative care; to ensure patients see someone who knows the situation well.'

Mr Wright said: 'He did more than you could ever expect anyone to do. He insisted on visiting her at home when she was at risk of infections from chemo.

'It was genuine kindness. He was also a very astute man, bang up-to-date with the latest treatments,' said Mr Wright.

'He was there for every turn and twist — you just knew that what he said was right.

'We're not private or anything, this is the NHS, and we've got a man like him. He's a step above the rest of us.'
