NICE backs insulin pumps for type-1 diabetes

Patients with type-1 diabetes can be treated with insulin pumps on the NHS if multiple daily injections fail to work, says NICE.
Both adults and children over 12 can be given continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion if despite injecting insulin they suffer from hypoglycaemia or if HbA1c levels remain at 8.5 per cent or above.
Under-12s can also be given insulin pump therapy if multiple daily injections are not practical or considered inappropriate, states a NICE technology appraisal issued yesterday.
The report backs NICE guidance from 2003, which ruled in favour of insulin pumps.
