London 'worst performing' for urgent care

26-Sep-08

Urgent and emergency care services in London are lagging behind those in other areas, a Healthcare Commission review published today has found.

The commission's report on out-of-hours services in England, ‘Not just a matter of time' examined out-of-hours GP services, A&E services, urgent care centres, and emergency ambulance services. Half of the 28 PCTs designated ‘least well performing' by the Healthcare Commission were in London.

By contrast, services in the north of England scored well: 42 per cent of the 48 PCTs designated as ‘best performing' were in the north, with those in the north east performing particularly well.

In addition, 68 per cent of PCTs in the north were judged to be ‘best performing' or ‘better performing', compared with just 15 per cent of those in London. Performance in outer London was weaker than in central London areas, where services generally scored well, the review found.
