NMC 'bullying and racism' investigated

16-May-08

Investigations into allegations of racism and bullying at the NMC are unlikely to finish until late summer, the organisation has said.

Ministers asked the Commission for Healthcare Regulatory Excellence (CHRE) and the Charity Commission to investigate after MP Jim Devine raised concerns in a debate on 11 March.

Mr Devine described the NMC as ‘fundamentally dysfunctional' and accused it of an ingrained culture of bullying and racism.

The CHRE brought forward its annual review of the NMC to 17 March this year, and is now conducting further assessment of its governance mechanisms. The annual review was extended to include more interviews with NMC staff than usual.

But the Charity Commission, urged by health minister Ben Bradshaw to conduct a further investigation, has yet to take any action, the NMC said.

NMC chief executive Sarah Thewlis has contacted the Charity Commission to ask whether it requires any information.

The NMC said it hoped the investigations will allow it to demonstrate that it is ‘fully accountable, open and transparent'.
