The government has reconfigured the NHS in England into a collection of profit-driven enterprises, doctors heard.
Newcastle GP Dr George Rae told the BMA’s Annual Representatives' Meeting (ARM) in Edinburgh yesterday that the healthcare reforms had undermined and fragmented NHS services in England.
He cited the example of commercial enterprises being encouraged to get involved in cataract operations.
‘What patients do not know is how much NHS money is being diverted out of clinical care into private expeditions,’ said Dr Rae.
He called on conference to vote that BMA works with other organisations to keep NHS services within the public sector and to inform the public of the detrimental effect to patient care.
The motion was carried with a large majority.
