Government scraps CVD screening plan

25-Jun-07

The government's planned national CVD screening programme for over-40s has been scrapped.

The programme was originally mooted for a national roll-out in England
in April this year, but a DoH spokeswoman has confirmed that it had been
decided that screening for CVD 'isn't very effective'.

Instead a risk assessment and management strategy for CHD is being
developed to be built into standard practice. The government will also
focus on improving public awareness of healthy living as part of a
system of life checks.

However, the British Heart Foundation has claimed that risk assessment
will fail to identify people at high cardiovascular risk who do not see
their GP.
