Bowel cancer checks will cost £40 million

05-May-08

The bowel cancer screening programme in England could cost over £40 million.

UK researchers have calculated that for a hypothetical population of
500,000 people, 66,956 of whom would be aged 60-74 and eligible for
screening, an estimated 34 cancers would be detected at a cost of £394,157.

Extrapolating this to the whole of England, with an estimated population
of 50,762,900, the cost would be £40,017,104.

Cost is likely to rise as more become eligible for colonoscopy, say the
researchers from the UK's Public Health Resources Unit.
