The Charity Commission has announced that it will not launch a formal investigation into allegations of 'racism and bullying' within the NMC.
The Charity Commission, along with the Commission for Healthcare Regulatory Excellence (CHRE), was urged to investigate by health minister Ben Bradshaw after the allegations were raised in parliament in March.
In June a report by the CHRE found 'serious weaknesses' in the NMC's governance. The NMC's president, vice-president and chief executive have since resigned or set a date for their departure.
A spokesman for the Charity Commission said that although it had no plans for a formal inquiry, it would continue to monitor the situation closely. 'The case is still open and our engagement is ongoing,' the spokesman said.
He said the commission would pay close attention as the NMC worked towards a new governance structure, the election of a new president by January 2009, and the implementation of an action plan set out in response to the CHRE report.
