'Use exercise to treat osteoarthritis'

28-Feb-08

Exercise should be a core treatment for people with osteoarthritis, according to latest NICE guidance.

The guidance on the management of osteoarthritis in adults recommends that exercise be offered irrespective of age, other illnesses or conditions.

Exercise should include local muscle strengthening and general aerobic fitness.

People with osteoarthritis should also be supported to lose weight if they are overweight or obese.

Those with knee or hand osteoarthritis should be offered topical NSAIDs for pain relief. Referral for joint replacement surgery should be considered for those who experience joint symptoms that have a substantial impact on their quality of life and do not respond to non-surgical treatment.
