It's time that NPs got formal recognition

05-May-08

As someone who meets WiPP's recommendations for advanced nurse practitioner training, I am dismayed by the large numbers of nurses claiming to be nurse practitioners without the appropriate qualifications (IN, 21 April). They put their patients and their own professional status at risk.

It is now several years since I completed an RCN-approved course and yet still the NMC has failed to regulate the role. This causes confusion to employing GPs and patients as to what the term nurse practitioner actually means? How much longer must we wait to have our skills formally recognised?

Sue Lawal, nurse practitioner, North Yorkshire.
