GMC: 'Unproblematic' introduction of civil proof standard

03-Jul-08

The GMC says that the introduction of the civil standard of proof into its fitness-to-practise cases has been ‘quite unproblematic’.

One month after the controversial new standard came into force, no cases have caused any difficulty, the Council's director of standards and fitness to practise Paul Philip said.

‘I still anticipate that there will be a legal challenge,' he added. ‘We would welcome the opportunity for any directive from the High Court to say what should and shouldn't happen.'

The defence societies are expecting the numbers of doctors suspended or erased to increase with the ‘much lower standard of proof'.

The GMC is keeping the new standard under review and is expected to report by the end of the year.
