Johnson bakes cake for nurse for NHS birthday

08-Jul-08

Health secretary Alan Johnson has delivered at least one of his promises – a home-made cake for a nurse.

The jocular Mr Johnson presented the cake to RCN member BJ Waltho to celebrate 60 years of the NHS.

At April’s RCN congress, Ms Waltho, from East Dorset, had asked Mr Johnson what nurses could expect from the health secretary as a sixtieth birthday present.

The health secretary replied: ‘I will personally bake you a cake, I promise you that.’

The cake was presented after a ceremony in Westminster Abbey last week to mark the 60th anniversary of the NHS.
