News in brief: Obesity is not a medical problem

04-May-07

Scottish LMCs voted for obesity to be dropped from the quality framework on the grounds that it is a lifestyle rather than medical issue. Dr Murray MacPherson, from Greater Glasgow and Clyde, said that there was little point in having an obesity register: ‘If there is no evidence for its inclusion, why is it there?’ Dr Maureen Smith, from the same area, said that obesity was not a medical problem: ‘We should stop it from being medicalised.’
