GPs condemn NHS privatisation

11-Jul-08

GPC chairman Dr Laurence Buckman won a standing ovation at the BMA's Annual Representative Meeting (ARM) in Edinburgh this week after he condemned the 'distorted market' that GPs are being forced to compete in.

He said some PCTs were convinced they should offer contracts to any private provider which underbid GPs.

Doctors at the ARM said the internal market had failed, and GPC member Dr George Rae warned the DoH had reconfigured the NHS into a collection of profit-driven enterprises.

GPs also condemned the DoH for briefing against them.
